What fabric are you wearing? Is it natural or synthetic?
A natural fabric is made of plants and animals, and our synthetic fabrics are made entirely by man.
So what fabrics are out there..?
Acrylic is produced artificially through a synthetic polymer called acrylonitrile. It was first discovered in Germany in 1893. Acrylic as a fabric is warm and durable and is often used in sportswear, jackets and sweatshirts.
Acetate is a manmade fibre derived from cellulose (cellulose is found in the walls of plant cells). As such, this is commonly found and processed from wood pulp. The cellulose are then combined with acids and bingo a new fibre is born. Acetate is silky and soft and often used for wedding garments as it drapes well. When dyed it also holds its colour really well.
Bamboo fabric is made from…..yup, you guessed it… bamboo! It really took off about 4 years ago when the fashion industry went mad for it! It's soft and durable, so producers tend to use it for socks, underwear and everyday T-shirts, but it is incredibly versatile and can also be strong enough to be used in bulletproof vests.
Chiffon is so delicate that we tend not to use it for everyday wear, Instead it is used for beautiful scarves, blouses for that special occasion, nightgowns and evening wear. Historically, Silk was very expensive and reserved only for the upper classes. So when manmade fibres like Chiffon were developed, silk like fabrics became more accessible for mainstream use.
Cotton is one of our fully natural fabrics. Did you know, it is made from the protective layer around the seeds of the cotton plant? Cotton fabric is fluffy, soft and breathable. It is also increadably durable so your 100% cotton garments will definitly last longer. This textile has been and continues to be used every day by millions for socks, T-shirts, underwear and nightgowns, to name just a few. (I found out a few days ago that cotton is even used in fishing nets and fire hoses!)
Cashmere comes from the Cashmere Goat so it’s a totally natural fibre. Just like my dog they grow a double layer coat, the top one and the soft fine one that provides extra warmt. Cashmere continues to be one of the fashion industry's most luxurious and expensive fabric. It is most commonly used for jumpers and warm scarves, and I think everyone that has worn true cashmere, will agree how wonderful it feels on your skin.
