Welcome to the first instalment of HINTS & TIPS. Today’s subject is, how to dress for your body type. So let's get stuck in...
There are five main body shapes for us women. We have the rectangle, inverted triangle, hourglass, pear and apple.
Over the next few instalments we will be giving you some of our top tips for each of these shapes, which will help you to make flattering and confidence boosting clothes choices when shopping.
For a long time, all I wanted was the classic hourglass figure to stare back at me in the mirror. As the years went by, I grew to love the shape I am. I made it my mission to educate myself on how to accentuate my lines, give my confidence a jump start and most importantly, dress to make me feel good!
So, let’s start with the rectangle.
What is a typical rectangle shape? The rectangular body shape is characterised by a straight silhouette. When looking at yourself straight on, your shoulders and hips are a similar width and your waist has little definition. Your body has a balance between top and bottom, giving you a silhouette with few curves.
If your body shape is a rectangle, you're in good company, along with these lovelies…
Kate Hudson (43 years old)
Gwyneth Paltrow (50 years old)
Kate Moss (49 years old)
Cameron Diaz (50 years old)
Natalie Portman (41 years old)
Our tips for ROCKING your rectangle.
The best dress for you is the classic wrap. The front of these style of dresses will fall perfectly over your straight frame creating the illusion of a curvy top half. If wraps aren’t your thing, the good news is that you can get away with a more shapeless dress, if you team it with a belt. Again this draws in your middle section giving you a less blocky line.
What are the best necklines I hear you ask. If you are trying to create the look of being curvy then the V-neck is your best friend. Try ruffles or puffs on the shoulder and lace embellishments as this will give volume where you need it most and change the balance of your silhouette.
The perfect sleeve for you is one that has volume. So we would suggest a bell bottom sleeve, as this will pull the eye to your hips and thighs by creating a curvy line..
And a big no no for rectangles… never wear a block colour. Although this may seem a safe and easy option, one colour will give you no definition on your straight frame. If your favourite dress is one colour, don’t panic. Pair it with layers and accessories to break up your shape and add exciting lines.
With all these tips you'll soon be saying…HELLO HOURGLASS!!
And remember, EVERY PATH IS A RUNWAY!!
